AAC In Simple Terms
Augmentative and Alternative Communication is a way to help people who are non-verbal or have difficulty speaking to communicate with others. AAC can include simple tools like pictures, gestures, or sign language, as well as more advanced technology like speech-generating devices or apps on tablets. It also encourages language development in young children of all abilities!
How Communication Boards Work
These boards were carefully curated just for The Museum by Chileda and The La Crosse Area Autism Foundation. To use, the child should point/touch the images that represent what they want to say. A communication partner may help by holding the board, guiding the user’s hand, and modeling the use of the board with verbal language as they touch images.
